Position Description:

Washtenaw Community College is looking for part time Welding Instructors on an on going basis. If not selected for next semester application will be considered for future semesters as needed. The successful faculty member will be expected to provide quality instruction, during the day, evening and/or weekends, related to all aspects of welding; including but not limited to, manufacturing, fabrication, inspection, testing and safety.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
• Demonstrate to student body the principles, techniques, procedures and/or methods ranging from basic to advance on each of the following welding/cutting processes: SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, PAC, SAW, OFW, OFC, CAC, SAW, Soldering and Brazing
• Present lectures and conduct discussions to increase student’s knowledge and competence of subject matter
• Provide individualized instruction on welding processes, blueprint interpretation, fabrication, and any other related subject matter or coursework when possible
• Connect subject matter with related fields so that students get an understanding of real world applications
• Educate students in safe work practices when using hand tools, power tools, shop equipment and when welding, cutting and fabricating
• Supervise and monitor student’s use of tools and equipment to help ensure safe work practices are being executed at all times
• Utilize technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience where appropriate, i.e. use of Blackboard, development and use of videos, visual aids, presentation material, etc., that aid in student understanding and adoption
• Collaborate with department on updating of any course material (syllabi, objectives, etc.), to keep courses and offerings fresh and aligned with industry and on the cutting edge wherever possible
• Participate in college events, which may fall outside a faculty’s schedule, that promote our program and the college, such as; recruiting events, campus tours organized by the college, open houses and competitions sponsored by the department, etc
• Maintain technical knowledge of the welding field through active participation in professional development organizations, events, seminars, training, etc., and integrate relevant information into program
• Substitute for other instructors in field of discipline, when needed
• Advise students on registration, course selections, career decisions and other academic and vocational concerns
• Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently
• Demonstrate sensitivity to student’s needs and circumstances
• Maintain accurate and confidential records of student progress and submit final grade rosters each semester in accordance with college policy and FERPA
• Oversee/direct part-time staff
• Capable of following all college and department policies as it relates to the position, job duties and responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Bachelor Degree in Welding Engineering or related field of study and 5 years full-time industry experience in related field Or AWS Certified Welding Inspector endorsement in lieu of 5 years work experience
2. Or an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science in Welding Technology and 7 years full-time industry experience in related field Or AWS Certified Welding Inspector endorsement in lieu of 7 years work experience
3. Possess a current AWS welding certification
4. Proficient and able to teach all related welding processes, blue print interpretation and reading of weld symbols, layout and fabrication of metals, automated welding and cutting processes and have an understanding of metallurgy for welders
5. Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in all welding processes, in all positions, on plate and pipe
6. Must be able to demonstrate computer skills and the ability to send and respond professionally to emails
7. Must be able to demonstrate proficient computer skills and the ability to multi-task
8. Must be able to demonstrate organizational skills, a positive management style and the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with students, administration and staff
9. Must be able to lecture and demonstrate course material during a 4-6 hour period, in a classroom or laboratory environment
10. Must be able to lift and move objects of 50 pounds
11. Must be able to operate machinery in an industrial welding environment
12. Must be able to tolerate frequent exposure to a wide variety of chemicals, fumes and loud noises which are common to the welding industry
13. Must be able to handle and mix chemicals properly and safely
14. Must be available to instruct day, evening and/or weekends
15. Must possess a valid driver’s license

Additional Desirable Qualifications
• Prior teaching experience at the college level
• Work experience or formal education specializing in automated welding and cutting or welding inspection and testing
• Forklift certification or license
OSHA Authorized Trainer Card (general industry outreach trainer)
• Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification
